A truly efficient way to use water in a
yard is to design the yard so that it thrives predominantly on rainfall.
Under the Florida Friendly Yard program the goal is to reduce the impervious areas by planning for and accommodating for the water flow. This is done by substituting porous materials. Porous surfaces include: brick driveways, mulch paths, allow water to soak into the ground. Gravity helps water soak or percolate into the ground.
The roof on our home, our driveways and other paved surfaces do not allow rain to soak into the ground, rather they cause the rain that lands on them to run off our property. If we add paved side walks and patio areas, we increase the amount of impervious area on our property.
